Stephen is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, qualifying in 1985. A graduate of the Aston Business School, he trained with Price Waterhouse in Birmingham and gained post qualification experience with Binder Hamlyn (now BDO Stoy Hayward) and Neville Russell (now Mazars) before joining Crowther Jordan.
