As ex-HMRC Senior Tax Professionals with the current and relevant knowledge of HMRC's practices and ways of working, our skills and experience are highly sought after by clients and fellow tax professionals alike.
We offer peace of mind to those under investigation from HMRC as well as those who require complex tax matters to be resolved in a proactive manner with the greatest levels of tax efficiency. We take great pride in our reputation for putting clients first and never compromising on impeccable levels of customer service.
We have seen the best and worst that HMRC have to offer. While working for the department our tax professionals have experienced the incredibly detailed training that HMRC provide to their staff and since leaving have seen how dramatically their actions can effect the lives of those that they are investigating.
We understand that for many people it can be very stressful experience to deal with HMRC for anything from filing tax returns to responding to letters and enquires or investigations. When HMRC conduct checks, enquiries or investigations, most people don't know who they should turn to in order to resolve their problems.
Our aim is to ensure that all clients, whether individuals or private practices, are assisted by experienced professionals with the right skills to do the very best job that they can, all while providing an unparalleled level of customer service.
We want to make sure that our clients know from the start that we have taken a proactive approach in order to get things right, first time and that when they are in dispute with HMRC there are experts who can represent them to resolve such disputes in their favour rather than accepting HMRC's position. HMRC can and do get things wrong.
To give an example, a client that we represented recently received VAT assessments following a standard VAT inspection. Their reaction was very much "Oh well, I guess that's how much I owe" when faced with a bill of almost £100,000 and it was very much their intention to simply pay what HMRC told them they had to pay. Following a review of the assessments against the statutory requirements under which HMRC must operate and the facts of the case, we were able to reduce the assessments to under £10,000. Quite a success for our clients for the act of simply making sure they sought the correct experts for the job.
More recently, a client reached out to discuss their Capital Gains Tax circumstances. Initially their thoughts were that they would be paying over £300,000 in CGT. Following our review and some well-timed advice, we were able to reduce the initial CGT liability to under £60,000 and have a high proportion of this tax deferred.
The Tax Faculty LLP have gained a reputation for the time we take to get to know our clients and their overall aims and objectives when it comes to their tax circumstances. Making sure to speak directly with every client who has engaged The Tax Faculty LLP to conduct work for them is a priority for us.

Being an ex-HMRC Senior Tax Inspector specialising in Capital Gains Tax, I’ve gone from investigating taxpayers to protecting them. I worked at HMRC for 20 years so I am perfectly placed to provide an unparalleled view of the intricacies of all aspects of tax as an investigator.
At HMRC I underwent six intensive years of formal training to reach the highest possible level of Tax Professional, as well as attaining a 1st Class Hons Degree in Professional Studies in Taxation. This means I can offer our clients a unique insight into how to ensure that their tax affairs are in order.

Delighted with the overall service and result Charles delivered! We were hit with a capital gains request on a previous property that we had owned but sold quickly due to personal / work related circumstances. We had at the time of buying and selling the property taken advice from another accountant firm. After feeling no confidence in the direction suggested we discussed our concerns with the Tax Faculty, and it became apparent that the HMRC knowledge as well as level of experience would not only reduce the complexity of the situation but also take ownership of our case and deliver a positive financial result. I would highly recommend!

I contacted The Tax Faculty LLP as I needed help with Capital Gains Tax on a property I was selling. I spoke with Charles who I found to be friendly, helpful, professional and extremely knowledgeable. He explained everything in plain language, no jargon! He prepared and submitted the CGT return to HMRC on my behalf which took away all the worry and anxiety of getting things right when dealing directly with HMRC. I can’t thank him enough for the prompt and courteous service.

I felt totally at ease after contacting Charles Tateson regarding a CGT matter. Not being familiar with tax matters, it was great to have someone with Charles's HMRC background handling matters. Nothing was too much trouble for Charles and the whole transaction went very smoothly, with Charles handling any wrinkles or challenges that arose.

I have the utmost praise for The Tax Faculty for their speed and efficiency in the handling of CGT payable following the sale of my rental property. Charles Tateson, Managing Director was an absolute pleasure to work with. He is an ex senior HMRC professional with extensive historical expertise and knowledge of CGT and he made the process totally “stress free” for me. I am more than happy to recommend Charles to anyone in the future. Thank you Charles.

My sister and I recently sold our parents bungalow. Although we were both aware we had to pay Capital Gains Tax we were clueless about how much it would be. Charles was very kind and patient with us two elderly ladies and we are both delighted with the advice and service we received. We have no hesitation in recommending Charles to anyone who needs help in such matters.
