Bookkeeping is a job that most people think is simple but doing it well is more difficult and time-consuming than expected. Doing the job well brings rewards. Good record-keeping will enable you to be confident about how your business is doing. In good times it means new opportunities can be taken and, in hard times, it means some difficulties can be foreseen and even avoided. The Companies Act (for companies) and recent tax legislation (for sole traders) make it a criminal offence to fail to keep "adequate records".

Employing Other People Report

Things to consider are: Terms, Hours/Jobs/Tasks, Rates of pay and Tax status - should you deduct 20%, 30% or have they been awarded Gross Status? For the CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY SCHEME (CIS) no subcontractor should ever be paid without "verification" from H M Revenue & Customs, so it is very important to always obtain: Name and Address, Date of Birth, National Insurance number and Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).

Value Added Tax VAT Report

All businesses must register for VAT, if trading in a relevant activity, and turnover exceeds the relevant level. However, all business can register (voluntarily) for VAT if they are trading in a taxable activity, and turnover is below the current threshold, but registration may be worthwhile or beneficial in some way.

Tax Returns Report

All businesses need to declare their results to the Tax authorities and this is done by means of a Tax Return. Many of the tax returns are now filed on line once they have been approved by the client.
